It appears to be a real newspaper article though, and a great collectors piece. This photo is mentioned throughout several art and history publications, to include the Smithsonian American Art Museum. EXCEPT FROM THE SMITHSONIAN AMERICAN ART MUSEUM: "In one of his most striking compositions, Homer describes a Union rifleman perched on a tree limb, drawing a bead on a Confederate mark across the lines.
